Upon release, it received generally positive reviews, although some criticized its length, voice acting, and camera control, and became a best-seller. The game was published by Activision, and primarily developed by their recently-acquired subsidiary, Treyarch, who had previously ported Neversoft's 2000 Spider-Man video game to Windows and Dreamcast. Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe reprise their roles from the film, as Spider-Man and the Green Goblin, respectively, while Bruce Campbell, who played a wrestling ring announcer in the film, narrates the game's tutorial and bonus levels. While the game directly adapts the plot of the film it is based on, it also builds upon it by including scenes and villains not present in the film. The Game Boy Advance version was later re-released and bundled on Twin Pack cartridge with Spider-Man 2: The Game in 2005. Made to promote the film of the same name, it was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and Game Boy Advance on Apin North America (two weeks before the film's release), and June 7 in Europe. Spider-Man, also known as Spider-Man: The Movie, is a 2002 action-adventure video game based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man.
